The Canadian comic duo Wayne & Shuster tried their hand a historical comedy set in ancient Rome. Possibly they were inspired by "A funny thing happened on the way to the forum", but they also frequently used Roman themes in their sketch show (such as Maximus P.I., spoofing Magnum P.I.).
