Mekk Elek az ezermester

Directed by István Imre, who made over a 100 animations during his career, but also other numerous films as well. The unique thing about Mekk Elek was that the voice-overs were notable Hungarian actors of the era. The incredibly catchy music was composed by György Ránki, and the texts were supplied by József Romhányi, who often hid sarcastic references to Hungarian reality of the days in the dialogues. Only one series of 13 episodes was made. It's important to know that, just as cows say "Moo" and cats "Miaow", goats say "Mekk". At least they do in Hungary . They also prefer to speak almost entirely using the letter "E" and its characteristic stabby sound. In Hungarian it's possible to construct whole sentences in such a manner. Not quite so simple in English. József Romhányi's original script is packed full of wordplay; double meanings, puns, rhymes. All kinds of verbal magic. With ypse's copiously explained translation from the Hungarian and corvus' native English restyling, I hope we've produced a translation which does some justice to the original. It's involved much head-scratching and many revisions and ultimately, because of the challenges involved we've had to distance ourselves from the original text to approximate it more closely.
