In the miserable Northeastern Brazil, a ruthless land Baron wants to throw a poor farming couple out of their property. Any movie maker who sets out to tell the story of his people, to pit good against evil and cowboy against hired gun, to mix in local myths and Christian symbolism, to match reality with fantasy, to inveigh against the evils of capitalism, to tell a story of tortured love—and, what's more, do it all as a musical — had better bring in a masterpiece. Sérgio Ricardo, a Brazilian singer, composer and movie maker, set out to do all of these things in a film called "The Night of the Scarecrow".
