In 2006, Romanian Television (TVR) conducted a vote to determine whom the general public considered the '100 Greatest Romanians' of all time, in a version of the British TV show '100 Greatest Britons'. The resulting series, "Mari români", included documentaries on the top ten and historical debates, with viewers having further opportunities to vote after each program. Unlike versions in other countries (like Germany, where f.e. Adolf Hitler and Erich Honecker were exluded), there was no filter and a few controversial people from Romanian history made the list. Especially Ion Antonescu, who made the top ten, was an unexpected nominee and he was dealt with in a critical manner. On 21 October 2006, TVR announced that the 'greatest Romanian of all time' according to the vote was Stephen the Great (Stefan cel Mare).
