Toren Atkinson was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba but raised in Calgary, Alberta and graduated from Chilliwack Sr High in Chilliwack, British Columbia. His father played drums in the Canadian Forces. In 1992 he started the H.P. Lovecraft homage rock band The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets as the lead singer.
